Chelsea’s pursuit of Xavi Simons in the ongoing summer transfer window hit a snag as RB Leipzig turned down the Blues’ latest swap deal offer, as per recent reports. The proposed deal involved Chelsea offering €40m (£34.5m) along with Christopher Nkunku in exchange for the 22-year-old Dutch international, who is a key target for Enzo Maresca’s squad. However, Leipzig rejected the offer, citing that Nkunku no longer aligns with their salary structure, according to German outlet BILD. Despite Simons having agreed to personal terms with Chelsea, Leipzig is holding out for €70m (£60.4m) for the talented attacking midfielder/winger, who has amassed an impressive record of 21 goals and 23 assists in 76 games for the German club. While Chelsea remains in negotiations to secure Simons before the transfer window closes, Manchester City has reportedly entered the fray in an attempt to hijack the deal. Yet, it is believed that Simons favors a move to Chelsea over joining the Cityzens this summer. Notably, Chelsea has been active in the transfer market, having already acquired several players, including Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jorrel Hato, Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr, and Kendry Paez this season. Renowned Dutch coach Rene Meulensteen expressed optimism about Simons potentially thriving at Chelsea, highlighting his versatility and creative prowess. Meulensteen praised Simons’ ability to operate in the No.10 role or as a winger, emphasizing his playmaking skills and intensity on the field.
