The cricket world was left in awe as Dewald Brevis, the young South African talent, etched his name in history by smashing an unbeaten 125 runs to clinch a record-breaking T20I century against Australia. Known as ‘Baby AB’ for his batting style reminiscent of AB de Villiers, Brevis displayed his class and power on the field.

Former South African fast bowler, Dale Steyn, took to social media to express his admiration for Brevis, calling him “the real deal.” Brevis achieved this remarkable feat in just 41 balls, becoming the youngest South African to reach a T20I century and the second-fastest in his country’s history, following David Miller’s 35-ball ton against Bangladesh in 2017. His innings was a spectacle of 12 boundaries and six massive sixes, completely turning the game around for South Africa after a shaky start at 57/3 in the seventh over.

Australia’s decision to bowl first seemed promising as Ben Dwarshuis and Glenn Maxwell struck early blows, but Brevis, alongside Tristan Stubbs, orchestrated an incredible comeback, adding 126 runs for the fourth wicket.

Brevis not only set a new record for the highest individual T20I score by a South African but also against Australia, surpassing Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unbeaten 123 in 2023. His innings also stands as the highest T20I score achieved on Australian soil, guiding South Africa to a commanding total of 218.

Despite a valiant effort from Tim David, who scored a quick fifty, the Australian batsmen struggled against the Proteas’ bowling attack. Alex Carey’s late charge was not enough to chase down the target, and Australia fell short by 53 runs, marking their second-largest defeat in a home T20I. With the series tied at 1-1, all eyes are now on the thrilling decider set to take place in Cairns on August 16.
