Infectious disease specialist Alessandro Diana presented an overview of the new coronavirus strain, nicknamed “Frankenstein.” He said it is more infectious, but not more dangerous. Vaccination has once again become a focus of discussion.
New COVID-19 “Frankenstein” Variant Spreads in Europe
The new XFG variant, known as “Frankenstein,” has already become the leading variant in Europe. According to the European Centre for Disease Control, it accounted for over 80% of registered cases in early September.
Symptoms and Characteristics
Diana explained that “Frankenstein” is a combination of two subvariants of omicron. “Anyone with a runny nose, sore throat, and body aches today could have this particular COVID-19 variant,” the specialist noted in an interview with the Swiss television channel RTS.
Despite its more active spread, the course of the disease remains typical: cold-like symptoms—cough, sore throat, and general malaise.

The Role of Vaccination
The expert emphasized that available vaccines remain effective against the new strain. However, vaccinations are recommended primarily for the elderly, patients with chronic diseases, and pregnant women.
“The main thing is the burden on the healthcare system. So far, hospitals are not under significant pressure,” Diana noted.
COVID as a Seasonal Disease
According to the expert, the coronavirus is increasingly becoming a seasonal infection, similar to influenza. “Vaccination recommendations are gradually becoming the same as for influenza,” he concluded.
