Macron responded to Trump’s demand to impose tariffs on China.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the European Union will conduct its own diplomacy regarding China and decide for itself whether new tariffs and duties are needed.
He was commenting on Donald Trump’s demands that Europe increase pressure on Beijing.
Macron emphasized that the EU’s strategy toward China is aimed at risk mitigation, not a complete severance of relations. He stated that the current priority remains addressing sanctions against Russia.
“We need to focus on secondary sanctions, if they make sense. It is important to understand what assistance Russia receives from third countries and increase pressure there,” he said.
The French leader noted that sanctions are generally the right tool, but they should be applied purposefully and in direct contact with Russia.
Trump’s Ultimatum to Europe
The US President has repeatedly stated that Europe must take tougher action against China. He recently reiterated that the EU “must do something” to expedite the end of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Washington is also insisting that the new sanctions package include measures against China and India. Brussels, however, is prepared to only expand the list of individual refineries and banks, but is not discussing tariffs or duties.
