Massive Russian strike on Kyiv: dozens injured and new attacks on the energy sector
On Friday night, Russian troops launched a massive attack with drones and missiles on Kyiv, injuring at least 20 people. President Volodymyr Zelensky called the shelling a “cynical and planned attack on civilians.”
The mayor of the capital, Vitaliy Klitschko, said that critical infrastructure was targeted, and the debris of the downed drones hit residential areas.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the enemy launched 465 drones and 32 missiles, of which 405 drones and 15 missiles were shot down.
Kyiv in the dark: 28 thousand families without electricity
In the center of Kyiv, rescuers evacuated more than 20 people from a burning 17-story building. Five injured people were taken to the hospital.
According to the head of the Kyiv OVA Mykola Kalashnyk, 28 thousand families were left without electricity. Energy professionals promise to begin restoration immediately after the threat of repeated attacks is removed.
“It is precisely the civilian and energy infrastructure that has become Russia’s main target on the eve of the heating season,” Zelensky stressed.
The energy system under fire
The private company DTEK reported “significant damage” to its thermal power plants. According to Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko, this is one of the largest strikes on the energy sector since the beginning of the war.
Russia has resumed its winter bombardment tactics aimed at destroying energy and transport infrastructure, a strategy the Kremlin has used for the previous three winters.
Casualties in the regions
In the southeastern Zaporizhia region, seven night strikes killed a 7-year-old boy and injured three others, said Ivan Fedorov, head of the OVA.
In the east, in the Donetsk region, an ammonia pipeline was damaged, but local authorities assured that there was no threat to the lives of the population.
Ukraine responds
Zelensky said that Ukrainian counterattacks on Russian energy facilities are yielding results and raising fuel prices in Russia. A strike on a power plant in the Belgorod region has already caused a power outage.
The President called on the US, EU and G7 countries to take more decisive action:
“What is needed is not statements, but the supply of air defense systems and strict enforcement of sanctions.”
