In a recent turn of events, former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin has criticized the decision by the Indian team management to manage Jasprit Bumrah’s workload during the intense Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. Head coach Gautam Gambhir had announced that Bumrah would only feature in three out of the five Test matches, a move that did not sit well with Azharuddin.
Azharuddin emphasized the importance of commitment once a player is selected to represent the country, stating, “If there is an injury issue, then the Board and the player have to decide. However, I feel once you are in the team, you can’t pick and choose your matches. There is workload, but at this level, you have to manage it. You are playing for the country.”
Despite Bumrah’s absence in the second and fifth Tests, Mohammed Siraj stepped up admirably, becoming the standout performer for India. Azharuddin commended Siraj for his exceptional performance, especially highlighting his dedication and hunger to excel throughout the series.
“Siraj was outstanding. Thanks to his dedication and hard work, he has emerged as a key player for India. His performance, particularly in the crucial moments, was exceptional,” praised Azharuddin.
“His spell at the Oval was remarkable. In the absence of Bumrah, Siraj showcased immense intensity and commitment, proving himself as a rising star in Indian cricket,” he added.
While Bumrah managed to secure two five-wicket hauls in the series, India faced defeats in both matches. Despite this, the team managed to secure a draw in the series, winning the final Test by a narrow margin against England at The Oval in London.
The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series concluded with a thrilling 2-2 tie, showcasing the competitive spirit and resilience of both teams. Siraj’s standout performance in the final Test earned him the Player of the Match award, solidifying his status as a key player in the Indian cricket team.
