In a swift and decisive operation, the Nigerian military dealt a significant blow to armed gangs in the northwest region, eliminating over 100 members who have been causing havoc through mass abductions and attacks on villages. The operation, a combination of air and ground maneuvers, targeted the northwestern state of Zamfara, specifically the Bukkuyum local government area. Acting in preemptive response to intelligence indicating an imminent attack on a village by a large group of gang members, the military launched the operation in the early hours of Sunday. According to Nigerian Air Force spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the airstrike successfully neutralized several key leaders of the criminal gangs along with a substantial number of their associates. Ground forces also effectively intercepted and eliminated those attempting to escape into the dense Makakkari Forest where the operation unfolded. The swift and coordinated action by the military was prompted by a surge in banditry activities, particularly kidnappings, in the state in the preceding month, as reported by the United Nations conflict monitoring report cited by the French AFP news agency. These so-called ‘bandits’ have been a persistent threat to the region, not only extorting taxes from locals but also engaging in heinous acts such as long-term kidnappings for ransom. Furthermore, there are indications of increased collaboration between these criminal groups and jihadist elements, adding a layer of complexity to the security situation. Despite previous military offensives, including a July operation that resulted in the elimination of 95 gang members in Niger state, the violence continues unabated. The ongoing conflict has also aggravated Nigeria’s malnutrition crisis, as farmers are forced to abandon their lands due to the relentless activities of the ‘bandits’. The government’s commitment to combating these criminal elements is evident through these operations, yet the challenge of fully eradicating the threat remains. The resilience and coordination of these armed groups necessitate a sustained and multifaceted approach to restore peace and security to the affected regions, allowing communities to thrive without fear of violence and extortion.
