Poland scrambled aircraft amid threat of Russian drone strikes
On Saturday evening, September 13, a military aviation operation began in Poland. The reason was Russian drones recorded in Ukrainian border areas.
The operational command of the Polish Armed Forces reported that Polish and NATO-allied aircraft were scrambled. Air defense systems and radars monitoring the situation near the border were also put on combat alert.
“The measures are preventive in nature. Our goal is to protect the airspace and the safety of residents, especially those living near the potential threat zone,” the military clarified.
No official violations of the Polish border were recorded. However, just a few days ago, Russian drones did cross Polish airspace. On the night of September 10, Poland used combat aircraft for the first time to destroy them. Then, according to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the country recorded at least 19 violations, and the wreckage of 16 drones fell on its territory.
Due to the threat of strikes, the authorities temporarily closed the airport in Lublin and banned flights in the adjacent air corridor.
Meanwhile, in the western regions of Ukraine, including Volyn, air raid sirens remained in effect throughout the day. Some monitoring channels also reported that one of the drones could have flown into Romania, but there is no official confirmation of this.
Tusk stressed that all air defense forces of the country are on high alert and ready for immediate response.
