Former U.S. President Trump responded with surprise and a hint of sarcasm on Wednesday after Russian drones entered Polish airspace, a NATO member he has repeatedly pledged to defend. Writing on Truth Social, Trump posted: “What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!”
The brief remark came as NATO allies confirmed that more than a dozen drones had crossed into Poland overnight, prompting a rapid military response. Fighter jets from several member states were dispatched to intercept, marking the first NATO engagement of its kind since the war in Ukraine began.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki later said he had spoken with Trump, stressing allied unity and discussing the potential deployment of additional assets, including a U.S. Patriot missile battery. Officials also pointed to Poland’s pending acquisition of F-35 fighter jets, with hopes that deliveries might be accelerated in light of the crisis.
Trump’s envoy for Ukraine, Gen. Keith Kellogg, was traveling to Poland at the time of the incident and is expected to continue to Ukraine in the coming days. The drone attack underscored heightened tensions with Moscow, with Warsaw invoking NATO’s Article 4 to convene urgent consultations.
Meanwhile, European officials met in Washington to coordinate new economic pressure on Russia. Trump urged Europe to raise tariffs on Russian energy exports to countries like China and India, potentially up to 100%. He also signaled his readiness to impose fresh U.S. sanctions on Moscow and suggested he may soon speak directly with Vladimir Putin.
